Hi there everyone! Danielle here with some big news. Our Monsters, Inc. podcast has been recorded and in an attempt to give a better explanation than I gave during the recording (which you will hear on Wednesday), I am writing to all of you listeners! I usually write better than I speak...
When this podcast started, I knew that I wanted it to be an academic type show where listeners could get new perspectives on these amazing movies. I wanted our show to be similar to shows like Mugglenet Academia and Christ & Pop Culture. And in many regards we accomplished this goal. But a problem still existed. Actually, many problems did. For starters, our podcast has been set up in two formats - the puzzle piece format (evaluate music, story, animation, characters, etc. to piece together a film and measure how great it is) and the scene by scene format (walk through a film in it's entirety and talk about things that stood out as you go along) - and while these two formats work, they present issues. One is episode and recording length. For our scene by scene episodes, we end up recording for a really long time and then it takes an even longer time for me to edit and conversation often becomes stale. Another thing is that we are not the only podcast out there that discusses Disney movies. I've only listened to a few and they use the formats we use, and they've been doing this longer and have more of a following.
When we met to record for Toy Story 2, our rants that veered away from actual movie discussion were endless. It came to a point when we clicked stop on the recording and had to brainstorm ideas to make our show more unique and move it into the direction we had intended. The next day, we felt we had finally found our stride. The only thing to do next was to put our plan into motion.
You are our listeners and we appreciate you. We can assume that you listen to our podcast because you love Disney. We also can assume that if you love Disney, than you must also love Pixar. And we can also assume that you come to each episode having seen the movie of discussion, otherwise you wouldn't be listening. With those assumptions in mind, we want to take a more academic approach to what our podcast is and rather than discussing these works for only what they are, we want to expand on them with the knowledge we already know. Essentially, we want to make an episode of grubs. Remember grubs? We introduced that segment during our Dumbo episode where we compare the topic at hand to a recent event or popular event in pop culture. From now on, these grubs literally make our episode.
Imagine our main discussion as a four square game. I may start out with my discussion topic, grub, and we will discuss it. Then I will bounce the ball to Eric and he will share his grub and we will discuss that. We will all pass the ball to each other so that all four can lead their own discussion and look at these movies in a deeper way. This new format will allow us to think outside of the box in an academic fashion and hopefully inspire you to think outside of the box. It will also allow us to release a more solid and concise episode that isn't flying all over the place.
This is the direction we intend to stick with. It may take a little time to get used to but ultimately we all believe it will make our show better. Thanks for the continued support and enjoy the new format!
